Barbara Geoghegan of family business JS Dobbs says that she would love to hire another person, but currently she cannot afford to, and there is nothing in the Budget that would ease the cost for her of adding to the company's workforce.

JS Dobss sells and distributes healthcare products; Its main customer, the Health Service Executive, is planning to cut spending on procurement next year by about 30 per cent.

She argues that the state is cutting her workers' pay, but leaving no room for employers to ease the impact of that, while at the same time, it is making the business of hiring staff expensive.

JS Dobbs showcase medical technology to Taoiseach

The JS Dobbs display was one of twenty examples of medical technology that could save the exchequer over €70 million every year.

IMSTA, the association representing medical technology supply companies in Ireland, hosted the showcase of new technology, medical devices and diagnostic equipment. Some of the products on display, including stents, remote monitoring equipment and pain management devices, have been researched and developed in Ireland. The IMSTA showcase attracted coverage in the national media including RTE News, The Irish Times, The Irish Independent and the Sunday Independent as well as the medical and provincial press around the country.

Over 160 key stakeholders from Government Departments, health services, insurance companies and medical profession attended the event. Speaking at the showcase, the Taoiseach said that the Government launched a €500m ‘Innovation’ Fund to attract leading international venture capital companies and the medical technologies sector was central to his plans as he wanted Ireland to become a global player in some key areas.

"We will seek to ensure that there are good opportunities for collaboration with the HSE to build excellence for the benefit of Irish patients as well as industry. This even gives me a lot of confidence in the potential, not just the Med Tech sector, but of the Irish economy as a whole," he said.

Medical technology facilitates earlier diagnosis, less invasive treatment options, shorter hospital stays, reduced risk of hospital infections and faster recovery times for patients. As a result, greater use of the medical technology available can reduce the overall healthcare costs in Ireland. The industry estimates that the exchequer could benefit from savings of over €250 million a year, while facilitating improved health care services. Mr. Justin Carty, Chief Executive, IMSTA, said it was important that the key stakeholders saw for themselves the technology being developed, produced and used in Ireland.

"Patients will have faster access to new products and jobs in the medical technology supply industry will be sustained by improving the way this technology is evaluated and procured." IMSTA members also believe that the Department of Health and Children should work closely with the Enterprise Department and its agencies to maximize the benefits of International medical technology companies setting up in Ireland.
